We’ve come a long way since our launch party at the Future Gallery in June 2010 and we’re thrilled to have welcomed so many talented new members to the team.

Spoonfed Media in the Financial Times

Exciting times at Spoonfed Media HQ at the moment as we were featured alongside Huddle in an article in the Entrepeneur section of the Financial Times by Jonathan Moules. The article focuses on the importance of growing companies being prepared to rethink/pivot from their existing business strategies in order to be successful.

“The two founders spoke to more than 100 venues: from Tate Modern and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club to small independent venues. They got an almost unanimous answer: people would pay for some sort of technology to help them better market themselves online. So Bullseyehub was born, an online service delivered over the web that enables venue operators to set up and monitor marketing campaigns via Twitter, Facebook and email. Hundreds of customers have signed up to Bullseyehub in its first 6 months, according to Will…”

Budget 2011: Entrepreneurs and investors get a boost

It’s great that the government have chosen to encourage investment in high risk startup ventures, however I’m unsure of the extent to which the proposed changes to the EIS and VCT rules alone will help solve the current funding gap. These measures are a blessing for the creative and tech industries which have the hardest time accessing funding and alongside the plans to create ‘Digital Shoreditch’ means the future looks considerably brighter.

From the 6th of April 2011, a further 10% income tax break will be given to any individual investors in EIS companies as well as a doubling of the current £500k investment limit. All positive steps, although perhaps overshadowed by the significant 400% increase on the amount of money currently able to be invested in an EIS or VCT company from £2 million to £10 million. This will have a huge impact on many businesses and is available to those companies with up to 250 employees and up to £15 million in gross assets before investment. Unfortunately any investment in an EIS or VCT company will still require state aid approval which was the primary reason for the previously low levels; I guess we can’t win every battle but these are definitely positive steps.

The chancellor has effected a doubling of the ‘entrepreneurs relief’ scheme‘s lifetime limit to £10 million from the 6^th of April. The benefit of the ‘entrepreneur’s relief’ is a cap on CGT tax to 10% on the sale of business assets for small business owners, hopefully this measure should help encourage serial entrepreneurs to reinvest more gains and provide stimulus to the economy.

I welcome the changes to the R&D rules increasing the SME scheme rate of R&D relief to 200% from April 1st 2011 and an additional 25% from April 1st 2012, however a further simplification of the claims procedure and an extension of the definition of qualifying spend to apply to more games development expenditure would have been welcome. Onwards and upwards for startups!

Integrating with Facebook

There has been a lot of discussion lately about Facebook in various forums, especially since their annoucements at F8 outlining the future of the business and the Open Graph Protocol. While I don’t want to get involved in the overall debate, which has occupied many industry leaders, I would like to take a look at one tiny aspect of the open graph, the Like Button, and how we’re getting involved at Spoonfed.

It was a pretty easy decision for us to impliment a Facebook Like button on the site; we have hundreds of venue and artist details for London places and performers. However we also list over 30,000 events per month – a lot of things for people to ‘like.’ Events are slightly different to artists or venues and don’t necessarily represent a long term interest of our users (long running club night, exhibitions or comedy shows aside). So when we added the ‘Like’ button, we recognised that we also needed a way for users to share events that they liked and wanted to attend in a temporary manner that reflects the temporary nature of the event.

To do that, we added a one-click ‘add this event to Facebook’ button, in addition to the Like button, which would automatically create an event on Facebook and allow our users to quickly and easily invite their friends. Users can still ‘like’ an event but if they want to have access to the event on Facebook while it’s still upcoming, and not have the event details forever tied to their profile after the event is over, creating a Facebook event through Spoonfed is a great option.

We’re interested to see how our users make use of these two funtions on the site, both of which are developed to help Londoners share their favourite events with their friends. We believe that a ‘like’ model that mimics the temporary nature of events themselves will be a great way to encourage more events, from London and farther afield, to get integreated into the Open Graph.
